'The nature of the landscape made it challenging to photograph. The flat topped plateau giving a level horizon to any view, the richness of trees and hedges restricting the view and the 'greeness' of the countryside were particular problems.'

Pauline was appointed by The Countryside Agency to take photographs for the Blackdown Hills Rural Partnership.

The aims of the residency were several, the main one being to provide the Partnership with an image bank to be used in promotional material of many kinds, to record the changing times, the passing of the old and the coming of the new.

'The Blackdown Hills are known for the steep, wooded scarp face they present to the north. This slopes away gently to the south as a plateau deeply dissected by the three main rivers, the Yarty, the Culm and the Otter and their numerous tributaries. On top of the plateau there are wide open windswept places and in the valleys, nestle villages and hamlets, surrounded by an intricate pattern of small enclosed fields and linked by a maze of high hedged lanes.'

The partnership now has over 3000 images on which to draw and they do form the basis of a wonderful archive of the year 2003
