During my year building an image bank for the Blackdown Hills AONB, I visited many farms tucked away from view down the myriad of lanes. I realized how very special they are as the older ones are almost exclusively built of the churt – a flinty limestone- that lies about in the fields and streams of the Blackdown Hills. The buildings tend to be on a small scale in keeping with the many small farms that have existed on the Hills for centuries.
I got backing to record the buildings on over 100 farms from the Blackdowns Hills Sustainability fund and from Devon and Somerset’s heritage departments. A selection of the photographs have been put into a Blurb book which can be purchased from their website. The rest of the pictures are with the various funding bodies.
